Ear Surgery – Otoplasty

Children are by far the first beneficiaries of otoplasty – ear pinning – a classic and totally controlled ear surgery procedure. But adults can also benefit from this ear surgery, when they could not do it in their childhood if it is a cause for embarrassment.

The operation to repair protruding ears can be practiced from the age of 7 when the ear has already reached its adult size because, if we change the position and the angle of the ear before it is finished growing it can affect the growth of the cartilage. Parents are advised to have ear surgery done as soon as possible to avoid the teasing that may occur at school.

The cartilage which constitutes the “frame” of the ears, is responsible for their protrusion; the skin follows its contours. Therefore, this ear pinning procedure, focuses on the cartilage of the ear and not on skin or muscle. The ear has the distinction of being, with the exception of the brain, the most wrinkled organ of our whole body. A protruding ear is an ear that often lacks the natural fold, called the “antihelical fold”. Ear surgery has a peculiarity: most aesthetic surgery interventions aim to reduce wrinkles, while this surgery creates them!

The operation for protruding ears

To pin the ears, the surgeon begins by making an incision in the back of the ear, in the fold located where the ear meets the bone of the skull, then a section of skin is removed. In order for this to hold you need to do more than simply remove the skin! Ear surgery consists of recreating the natural curves of the ear and then working into the ear by extracting or weakening the cartilage in depth, bringing it closer to the skull and, finally, reattaching it. At the end of the operation the area is covered with a dressing and a Velpeau bandage.

Performed when needed, under general anesthesia, local or intermediate, total ear surgery lasts about an hour. The dressing is removed the next day, then it is necessary to wait a few months before the result is final. It is sometimes the case that the two operated ears have some slight differences, but that does not last. Most of the time, the two ears must be treated, but it is possible that only one ear needs to be modified.
