FUE and Micrograft hair transplants

The excitement surrounding his type of hair transplant is justified because it allows for a redistribution of hair in a natural way without any scarring.

When faced with hair-loss, some patients experience feelings of despair or of “mourning”. Today, it is estimated that more than 10 million French people are losing their hair, that 5 million are likely to become bald, that one million have true baldness and that at 50 years of age, one in two men are balding. Baldness, a sign of aging in men, is often considered to be “the wrinkles of a man”.

For a man, hair loss can be experienced as an attack on his well-being, on his personality and often leads to a decrease in self-confidence, and a fear of losing his sex appeal. I often give the example of Jean Marais, who at the end of his life, despite his deep wrinkles on his face and his gray hair, looked like a young man thanks to his abundance of hair. For instance, a 25-year-old man with a baby face without any wrinkles but with already advanced baldness will always be assumed to be older than his actual age, but surgery can help.

Presentation of the FUE Hair Transplantation Technique

In addition to leaving no visible scars on the sampling zone, The FUE hair transplant technique makes it possible to widen the donor zone from 30 to 50% into the temporal zones (which are zones where the strip harvesting techniques cannot go).

The FUE technique also makes use of the upper and lower areas of the occipital region that widens the donor area again, and therefore increases the number of possible hair transplants.

Steps of the FUE procedure: :

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation and lasts 5 to 8 hours, depending on the number of follicular units (FU) taken (1000 to 2200 FU or 3000 to 6000 hairs).

The hair in the donor area is shaved to expose the follicles. The procedure takes place with the patient lying in a curled-up position and will consist of the removal of the follicles using a titanium cylindrical punch with a diameter ranging from 0.7mm to 0.9mm. I use the automated FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplantation technique or, more precisely, the automated SAFER (Suction Assisted Follicular Extraction and Re-implantation) procedure, which I participated in the development of in 2007 and that I still use today. Is has several advantages including time savings, an effortless sampling procedure, and a harvest that consists of optimum quality grafts since it is no longer necessary to use a clamp to extract the graft, a gesture known to increase the risk of traumatizing and damaging the hair follicle samples.

The SAFER technique is practiced by penetrating the punch into the skin, then simultaneously suctions and harvests the entire follicle without any damage. Thus, one can get up to 100% intact and suitable grafts.

After about ten days, the markings left from the extraction process fade and the donor area resumes its normal appearance after 15 days.
Then, in a seated position, we will use a very tiny blade to make micro-incisions into the balding area.

The spacing between each incision will be very tight to will allow for a natural result that will be visible about 4 months post-op.

The repositioning of the follicles into the incisions will be done using a microscope and special micro-tweezers similar to what jewelers use.

FUE is the ideal technique for:

Patients who wish to wear very short hair in the donor area or who are considering shaving their head.

Patients who only need a small transplant to correct a facelift scar, for example, or the scar from a previous FUT hair transplant.

Patients with active social life who cannot reduce their activities for a long period of time.
